Just as soon as a federal ban was placed on the product K-2(synthetic marijuana) officials are now moving to address the problem of bath salts. Much like the synthetic marijuana this product is highly addictive and legal for purchase over the counter or on line. These bath salts are marketed under names such as Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky, Charge Plus, and Sextacy. This product is being used as a form of cocaine for snorting and smoking.
The problem of Ivory Wave abuse began in Europe and has attracted a following in the United States. This product has been known to be available in smoke shops and convenience stores throughout the country with prices ranging from $20 to $80 dollars. The main ingredient is the chemical methylendioxypyrovalerone(MPDV). Side effects associated with Ivory Wave include euphoria, increased energy , rapid heart rate, insomnia, muscle spasms, and anxiety. While much of these side effects can be short lived the abuser is said to develop a stronger craving to reuse.
Bath Salts have prompted the attention of law enforcement and legislators throughout the United States. This issue is of much relevance in terms of public safety and community awareness. It is in the hope that through media awareness more people especially parents can be aware of this latest danger. At the Rio Grande Council our PRC11(prevention resource center) is committed to providing the public with pertinent information to promote healthy lifestyles and decision making. For further information on this topic one can check online at www.gchidta.org , www.buddablend.com and www.cadca.org .
